So it's taken me a long time to remember how to write spoken word poetry. Since around December I've been struggling with my confidence and belief in my writing so I stopped, just writing prose here and there, but recently I've been able to find some inspiration from other poets, friends and youtube videos, and I've finally started writing pieces again (two or three in the works right now, yay). Here are some of the most inspiring poems I've been watching repeatedly recently. Enjoy! This year I was lucky enough to go to the Brave New voices festival in Philadelphia as entourage for the Asheville slam poetry team. For those who don't know, Brave New Voices is this amazing international youth poetry festival sponsored by Youth Speaks. It was an amazing experience. There were so many fantastic, inspiring poets there who have helped to remind me why I write. Everyone there was kind had their own story to share. I can't describe how great it was. Also, everyone on my from the Asheville team was incredibly supportive as I dealt with some tough problems that arose during the trip. I realized how unbelievably lucky I am to be

Seventeen Things I Learned This YearI. Rub sugar, not salt, into your wounds. II. Self-destruction is addicting. III. Whale’s sing to each other. IV. Go driving when it’s midnight and seventeen degrees outside. Turn the music up so loud you can’t think anymore. Roll the windows down. Stick your arm out the window. Try to forget temporarily. V. Sit in empty church parking lots and learn a new constellation every night. VI. Eat tangerines in the shower until you have citrus peel ground underneath your fingertips. VII. It would cost around $60,000 to climb Mount Everest. VIII. Write. Even when you don’t want to.
