Certain boys used to press their fingertips into my skin as if they were cigarette butts and I was an ashtray. They stamped out leftover guilt that wouldn’t burn away, grounded it into my skin so that when it rained, I could smell smoke and their brands of cologne. There are burn marks on the insides of my palms from all the times they held my hands with bonfires between theirs. I am an atheist who sometimes prays to God. I don’t believe in heaven, but my grandmother did. Sometimes I look at the sky for no reason; I like to think she’s smiling down on me. I never went to church on Sundays, but I’ve sat in empty church parking lots at midnight, chain-smoking and tracing constellations. When I looked at him, I believed in God, just for a second. Fiction takes time...so much time. The harder I pursue it, the more elusive it becomes. After a lot of frustration and over blown expectations, I finally settled down enough to let the story rest inside of me and reveal itself. Yes I am still lost in 18th century France, but I now know what part of France my story moves in. For a while I was in the wrong place headed the wrong direction. I had to go back to the very beginning of the story and discover where the cracks in the foundation of the story began. Slowly I have been working through a chapter at a time. So it's taken me a long time to remember how to write spoken word poetry. Since around December I've been struggling with my confidence and belief in my writing so I stopped, just writing prose here and there, but recently I've been able to find some inspiration from other poets, friends and youtube videos, and I've finally started writing pieces again (two or three in the works right now, yay). Brave New Voices 2014

This year I was lucky enough to go to the Brave New voices festival in Philadelphia as entourage for the Asheville slam poetry team. For those who don't know, Brave New Voices is this amazing international youth poetry festival sponsored by Youth Speaks. It was an amazing experience. There were so many fantastic, inspiring poets there who have helped to remind me why I write. Everyone there was kind had their own story to share. I can't describe how great it was.
